SMSC in RE

Religious Education (RE) lessons can provide a valuable opportunity for pupils to engage with and learn about SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development. By exploring beliefs, values, and ethical questions through the lens of different religions, RE can help pupils to broaden their perspectives, understand and respect diversity, and develop their own sense of self and place in the world. Here are some examples of how SMSC can be incorporated into RE lessons:

Developing empathy: RE lessons can involve discussions and role-plays exploring the experiences and feelings of others, encouraging pupils to understand and empathise with people from different backgrounds and cultures.


Encouraging respect: By exploring the beliefs and practices of different religions, RE lessons can help pupils to understand and respect diversity, and develop a tolerance and appreciation of different cultures and lifestyles.


Moral and ethical development: RE lessons often involve considering ethical questions and dilemmas, such as issues of fairness and justice, helping pupils to develop their moral compass and make informed decisions based on their values.


Understanding different cultures: By exploring the festivals and traditions of different religions, RE lessons can help pupils to understand and appreciate different cultures, and promote cultural awareness and understanding.


Developing critical thinking skills: RE lessons often involve analysing religious texts, beliefs, and practices, encouraging pupils to engage with different perspectives, develop critical thinking skills, and make informed decisions based on evidence.


Incorporating SMSC into RE lessons can help pupils to develop their emotional intelligence, empathy, respect for others, and their own sense of identity and place in the world.
